So, it’s just about time I really drop the new YA. I want my Tommy fix, and then I’m done.

What follows below contains spoilers for #5 of YA V2 and very strong personal opinion. I really don’t give much of a damn if you disagree with it. If you feel the new run is the best thing ever, just keep scrolling, your day will be more pleasant.

Let me explain you a thing.

There have been quite a few, eloquent and very reasonably argued posts about why people are dissatisfied with Gillen’s run and in effect, dropping the book. I agree with quite a few of them, but I figured, hey, keep buying the issues, it could get better or I could hate it less.

Oh how very wrong I was.

Let met tell you something before I launch into all of my ‘things I don’t like’ speechy part.

I was very excited when the new run was announced, even more so when I heard my favourite Marvel character would be joining the roster. No, it wasn’t Kid Loki. It was goddamn Marvel Boy, someone I have desperately wished to get some attention that wouldn’t reflect on The Protector, but rather take a page out of the Morrissonian genius that IS Marvel Boy.

And hey, my favourite character joining my favourite team? What could possibly go wrong? I was pretty sure that nothing, not a bad plot or slightly off writing of the characters themselves would put me off of this book.

Wrong, Billywick, so very, very wrong.

Gillen has systematically undone every hope I had for YA V2. Every. Single. One.

I dread getting the new issues every month, because I know how upset I feel afterwards, how I’m seething with anger and disappointment. Now, a healthy mind would say, time to quit, fuck this shit it’s not for you. And I suppose if I had realised that there was no hope for improvement, I would have never stuck around to see Noh-Varr defiled by what Gillen has done with him so far.

Because make no mistake, this IS a post about Noh-Varr. He was the last vestige for me, the last hope to cling to, my only reason to invest money in a comic book I don’t like.

After today’s read of #5, I won’t be doing so anymore. Not even for Noh-Varr. Because this isn’t him. I expected A Fresh Take On Marvel Boy. I got The Protector Weeaboo Edition.

Who has been reduced to thinking with his dick, quite plainly.

Yes, I’m talking about the “i’m sticking around for the hot making out” dialogue.

I am absolutely disgusted. Seriously. The last issue strained my patience, but this one made me nauseous. Noh-Varr has been reduced to a single layer, there is literally nothing of the character I adore left.

And no, you can’t wave this one with your magic “well people change their entire personalities between 15 and 17” wand here, Gillen, because Noh is way outside of that age-range. He’s in his twenties at the very fucking least.

Now, main points that really make me so damn furious about Noh’s portrayal:

He is reduced to Kate’s “beau”.
Now in shiny Weeaboo edition.
He is no deeper than a puddle.

Let us now take a closer look at what I mean.

Item One on the agenda is the one I take the most issue with. Noh-Varr is literally no more than Kate’s romantic interest. Despite the apparent approach of “they had casual sex” which was supposed to mean something about sexual freedom etc, I see the beginning fermentation into romance.

The cutesie banter. Noh-Varr’s unfitting vernacular of “making love”. Kate “knowing” Noh so well suddenly (enough to call him out on his played cluelessness) despite not even remembering his name. And now this.

Noh-Varr has literally no other reason to be there other than to get some pussy. Sorry I’m not sorry, that is exactly what this dialogue felt like to me. No semblance of hedonism, no latent desire to help a bunch of ‘outcasts’ or whatever you want to call this ensemble. Noh is just there for the “hot make out”.

This pisses me off to the moon and back.

Point one: Noh-Varr is NOT a blushin’ virgin or an awkward teenage boy who’s never had sex before. I’m pretty fucking sure Annie taught him what a ‘make out’ is.

Point two: Noh-Varr would not prioritize getting some ass above whatever else he’d been doing. This makes it seem like he was floating around space, waiting for some sexy time.

Point three: It’s not even like Kate wants him there. She specifically told him to drop them somewhere. Noh-Varr is now reduced to the pathetic love interest who will probably confess to emotions before issue #10. So much for preaching the “it’s ok to sleep with someone without falling into a relationship immediately thing” message. Oh right, that was only the “style” of #1. Got it.

Okay! So, not only is Noh-Varr ‘sexualized’ (I really don’t find McK’s art any kind of appealing but that’s personal taste) but he is now no deeper than your average teenage boy who has nothing but tits and ‘gina on the brain.

Great.

Onto Item Two.

Now in shiny weeaboo edition. Really, it says it all. Noh has been on Earth, a while. Yes, the Protector asked about many things, understood so little despite Noh’s original intuition and fast adaptation to Earth.

But no. We’re ignoring the prior history, hoho. Out the window it goes. How to make a character strange enough to be an alien AND slap a reason for his presence on Earth on him? Make him a weeaboo! It doesn’t matter if he’s never shown signs of something like that before, and it doesn’t matter that he’s spent enough time wondering why humans even exist.

Just make him love music. But wait. It can’t be music that suits his personality and possibly his augmented physique (i doubt someone with super sensitive hearing would appreciate tinny girl harmony). No.

I will never shake the belief that Gillen simply saw an opportunity to key a character to his personal tastes. And that, to me, is just plain off. It feels like he didn’t give Noh any thought.

Onto Item Three.

Really, it’s just a conclusion now. Noh-Varr has turned from a complicated rebel who was far from maturity and politically and morally interesting to a mildly entertaining and yet pitiful background character and has now arrived at being reduced to the teenage hipster girl’s wet dream. He is nothing but eye candy with the personality of a napkin dispenser. He is no longer badass. His dialogue is so remarkably strained, it feels like Gillen was stumbling over every word in an effort to give Noh his own definition of effortless cool. For me, a complete and utter disaster.

Noh-Varr is no longer badass, not even when he shoots people in the face, because no one and nothing is surprised by his presence. His behaviour doesn’t stand out from xx other superheroes, he is no more violent or destructive than any given Avenger. He is no longer snarky, because his vernacular now includes “making love” “hot make outs” “my faking it”. His history is quickly done with, because we get not a single retrospective into his life. We only hear about what we already knew. He is not in a position to be an interesting character, because he is already firmly in place as the convenient transporter, glued badly onto the simplest of possible romantic interests.

He is no longer effortlessly cool, because Gillen is trying so hard to make him interesting without really giving him any attention at all.

I am disappointed. Beyond worlds, I am disappointed. I wanted to support this book so Noh would have a chance at ending in someone else’s hands, but at this point, I’d rather no one would have picked him up after AvX at all.
